A useful free guide can give someone a clear next step after watching your Reel. But manually replying to every “send me the link” comment takes time.
With ManyChat, you can set up an Instagram comment automation that sends readers a link to your PDF. This guide explains a simple approach: choose one post, use one keyword, and deliver one helpful resource.

Start with a useful PDF
Choose a resource that answers a specific question your audience already asks. Good starting points include a video-export checklist, a content-planning worksheet, a beginner’s guide to creator tools, or a checklist for preparing a digital product.
Keep the promise specific. “A five-step posting checklist” tells readers more than “my ultimate success guide.” If you haven’t created a resource yet, start with our guide to beginner digital products.
Give the PDF an accessible link
Your message needs a working destination. That can be a public PDF link or a page where readers can access the download.
Open the link in an Incognito window before using it. Check that it opens without requiring your account login and that the text is readable on a phone. Only share files you intend to make public: a download link can be forwarded.
Build a simple comment automation
ManyChat’s Auto-DM links from comments setup lets you choose a post or Reel, specify comment words, and prepare a message containing your link. An optional Opening DM can ask the reader to tap a button before receiving the resource. Menu labels and features may vary by account. Follow the current ManyChat setup instructions.
For your first automation, choose one relevant post, one keyword such as GUIDE, a short opening message, and one download destination.
Example Opening DM: Want the free content-planning checklist? Tap below and I’ll send the link.
Opening button: Send the checklist
Delivery message: Here’s your free checklist. Open it below and choose one step to try today.
Download button: Open the free PDF
Adapt these sample messages to your own resource.
Write a clear caption
Tell viewers exactly what they are requesting. For example: “Need a simple way to plan your next week of posts? Comment GUIDE and I’ll send you the free content-planning checklist by DM.”
Keep the keyword consistent with your automation. Avoid promising follower growth, sales, or income that a checklist cannot guarantee. For ideas on connecting the resource to useful posts, see our short-form content calendar guide.
Keep email signup separate and clear
Sending a requested PDF and subscribing someone to ongoing emails are different actions. For a simple first setup, deliver the PDF without requiring an email address. If you also invite readers to join your email list, explain what they will receive and let them choose.
For example: “Want more practical creator tips? You can also join our email list through the Free Creator Resource Library.” Don’t assume that commenting a keyword means someone wants every future promotion.
Test the whole journey
Before promoting the post widely, check the experience from a separate Instagram account:
- Leave the chosen keyword on the correct post.
- Check whether the expected DM arrives.
- Tap the opening button if your setup includes one.
- Open the PDF link on a phone.
- Confirm the file is the correct version.
ManyChat notes that its Instagram Post and Reel Comments trigger activates for the first comment a person leaves under a particular post or Reel. Repeated comments from the same account may therefore be unsuitable for testing. See its comments-trigger documentation.
Troubleshoot one step at a time
No opening message: Check the selected post, keyword, account connection, and whether the automation is live.
Opening message arrives, but no link: If you included an opening button, check whether the reader tapped it.
Link arrives, but the PDF won’t open: Test the destination without being signed in. Review sharing permissions and check for an outdated URL.
Avoid building extra branches until basic delivery works.
Review results without making big promises
Track whether people request the resource and reach the download. Improve the caption, message, or PDF based on what you learn. A free guide can help readers take a useful next step. It does not guarantee subscribers, clients, or sales.
Our practical AI workflow can help you organize research and draft supporting content, with a human review before publishing.
